Global Chinese Culture

A spectacular show of Peking Opera, based on the popular story of fairy White Snake and scholar Xu Xian, is to make its overseas debut in the University of Hawaii from Feb. 5 to Feb. 12., with English subtitles.
The Opera is presented by Jiangsu Provincial Peking Opera Theater, with many famous actors and actresses such as Li Jie. The story is set in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) when people believed that nature and humanity cross paths easily. Covering a wide range of themes such as transformation, love, betrayal, sacrifice and salvation, it is known as one of the “Four Greatest Legends of China” and ”National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China”, and has been adapted to over 100 versions of drama, TV and film programs. It is still the origin of many famous touristic scenes in Hangzhou today.
As one of the most celebrated Peking Opera repertoire rendered in recent years, this show incorporates colorful stage sets, graceful costumes, exciting fighting scenes and many intriguing emotional arias, a truly authentic experience of Chinese culture in a most befitting time.
Suitable for families, culture lovers, students and tourists alike. For beginners and veteran Peking Opera learners, this program is also recognized as Recommended Peking Opera Educational Program for Overseas Learners by the Chinese Ministry of Culture.
